Patrick Slattery Treatment Services November 16, 2022 As you are pondering joining our recovery family, it is important to understand our treatment modality here at Real Recovery. Through the beginning of this process, you may have to adapt to new practices, which may feel unusual at first. Understanding what our modality is and the aspects surrounding it are essential in setting yourself up for long-term success in recovery. What Is a Modality? A modality is an approach or method that is used to help individuals through the recovery process. While each individual has their own method of moving through treatment and recovery, we set our modality to a core standard for all individuals to adhere to. Many aspects of your recovery will differ from your peers, but these modalities can help set you up on a stable basis for success. Modalities are important, as they set up a base structure for individuals to follow within our sober living home. It can be challenging to bring together various groups of people. Establishing similar rules and boundaries within a sober living facility is not always an easy task. While everyone has a different approach regarding recovery, our three key concepts within our modality can be utilized to create a similarity between each resident’s journey. Following these simple expectations encourages a respectful and honest nature for each person to thrive upon. Our Treatment Modality In our sober living facility, we focus on being direct, precise, and polite as core aspects of our modality. We strive to provide you with feedback, which may be necessary to hear for your success. While engaging in these conversations politely, you can still feel a sense of respect. These three concepts are important to our team and community as we strive to provide you with the best support and feedback to help you through this stage of recovery. We believe that by utilizing these concepts during your journey in sober living, you can establish healthy routines and maintain a healthy support system. Breaking Down Our Modality Reviewing the three core concepts of our treatment modality, we hope you can develop a deep understanding of each of these values. Discover why we find these to be of great importance and determine how you can incorporate these values into your success in our sober living home. Direct Being direct is not always easy, but it is essential in providing you with the necessary feedback for you to improve. We believed that avoiding a harsh reality is a missed opportunity for you to grow. Sober living is not about taking an easy way out in recovery, but about further expanding your abilities. This is the time to focus on implementing your skills into real-life situations and understanding how you will manage sobriety moving forward. If we refrain from honesty, we are taking away the opportunity for you to improve. This environment is a healthy and safe space for you to have these direct conversations and receive the support you need to overcome these obstacles. You may feel high levels of frustration with our level of directness, but try to keep in mind that this is in your best interest. The goal of direct confrontation is not to be overly critical. Instead, we are trying to provide you with honest feedback and support to make alterations that will help you succeed in the future. Precise The journey of recovery is different for everyone. There is not one form of advice that can be applied to everyone in all situations. Because of these differences, it is important to be precise in our conversations regarding your specific experiences at Real Recovery Sober Living. If we come to you with a concern, know that the conversation is precisely meant to influence you and your individual needs. Rather than generalizing the experiences of everyone in recovery, we want you to feel that you can receive precise and individualized feedback. Precision is important in establishing your recovery plan. A lack of precision can lead you to implement practices that do not apply to your situation or do not resonate with you. You likely have a sense of what practices have positively influenced you during your previous stage of addiction. Being precise and honest with us about your past experiences allows us to help you fulfill your recovery needs. In return, we will assist you with what is precisely necessary for your needs moving forward. Just as precise measurements are important to many areas of life, we find precision important in your plan moving forward. Polite Being polite is a key focus at our sober living home. Respect is an intrinsic aspect of our modality. We promise to discuss hardships with you in a polite manner, and we expect the same from you. To keep everyone safe and comfortable in our sober living home, it is essential to be polite to one another. This helps everyone feel welcome and able to work on themselves without fear of others and their environment. We desire a sense of kindness to spread through our community, positively impacting all residents. The act of being polite does not necessarily mean you have to be friends with everyone in our sober living home. You may find there are people you disagree with or have conflicts with. These feelings are possible with any roommate or living situation. We are not requiring or asking you to make friends with everyone here. The only thing we expect in your peer interactions is for you to be polite. It is possible to be polite even if you do not like an individual. Set clear boundaries if needed and maintain a mutual level of respect, as you may have more in common than you realize. Recognizing the beauty in diversity, including individual differences and unique perspectives is an important part of appreciating life and the people around you throughout your recovery journey. Practices Following This Modality There are many different practices that we engage in within our facility that follow our modality. Whereas the practices you choose to utilize are within your discretion, we like to have a variety of opportunities open to you. Reviewing the potential practices we have available, you can determine what you choose to implement during your sober living stage of recovery. Motivation Enhancement Through being direct, precise, and polite, we can help you stay motivated to continue your sobriety maintenance. Motivation is often difficult to maintain, as many obstacles may cause you to offset your track to success. It can be difficult to have conversations that directly address a lack of motivation, but these conversations may be necessary. They can help you pinpoint the reasons behind a lack of motivation. You can then implement strategies to overcome these obstacles and regain motivation, precise to your needs. Having direct advice given to you can be frustrating or even hurtful. Knowing that our team is here to do this politely, you can understand the validity of their feedback. It is okay to feel frustrated with constructive criticism, but you can also apply it to better yourself. Improving on the skills you are lacking can be a great motivational factor for improvement. If everything came easy to you, then your motivation would likely dissipate. The obstacles are part of what encourages you to succeed. Support Groups Our support groups are built upon a framework of respect. To have productive group conversations, it is essential to be polite toward one another. Having this external source of support can provide you with a support system to rely on when obstacles arise. It can also help each member of our sober living community feel comfortable in expressing their concerns to others by knowing that their honesty will be responded to politely. Having a level of support through the process of sober living is essential. Living in this facility, you still have the potential to encounter moments of high stress. By being polite to your housemates, the favor can be returned to you. You never know when you will feel in need of extra support or assistance from others in the sober living home. Engaging in support groups and creating these relationships is a great way to set yourself up for success when these needs arise. Leadership Through your experience in our sober living home, you likely will develop a sense of leadership. By using the direct feedback you gain precisely regarding your situation, you can establish a sense of balance within yourself. Using your polite communication skills, you can eventually reach the point where you are guiding others in their success as well. Leadership skills will not only benefit your recovery journey but the journey of others as well. You can also utilize these skills in gaining future employment, as leadership is a key quality many employers are looking for. Gaining employment and setting yourself up for success in your future career goals is critical. So far in your recovery journey, you have likely not focused a great deal of time on establishing your future career goals. Utilizing the core concepts of our modality, you can figure out the steps that you need to take to solidify your education and career goals moving forward. You can then set yourself on a path to achieve these goals and prepare yourself for the future. Practices Following This Modality This modality can be used to your advantage in many ways. Throughout the journey of recovery, you will likely have to engage in various uncomfortable or sensitive conversations. It can be stressful to address the hardships of substance use disorder and manage conversations around this topic appropriately. Our modality allows us to be direct in the point we are trying to get across. It also allows us to be precise in the needs specified in your case. Lastly, we can utilize politeness to help the conversation flow easily so you can the conversation feeling respected. You can utilize this modality to help ease your conversations with staff and other peers within recovery. Utilizing these communication techniques, you can improve your social interactions with your friends and family members outside of the sober living home as well. Communication skills can be applied throughout various points in your life. Remaining polite through a stressful conversation is a key element in ensuring the conversation is productive and runs smoothly and effectively. While each individual needs a different focus throughout their recovery, we believe that our modality can be applied and benefit every individual in our sober living home. By being direct, precise, and polite in our conversations and approach to recovery, we can achieve success.
