Living with a substance use disorder (SUD) or alcohol use disorder (AUD) is not easy. We know that these often happen alongside mental health concerns. In 2023, nearly 3 million Floridians were estimated to be living with a mental health condition

For many people with mental health conditions and SUDs, inpatient treatment is the best option, especially early in recovery. In our inpatient services, you can expect to find the support you need during the first phases of recovery, giving you a dedicated space to focus exclusively on healing. Real Recovery guides you from inpatient services through your first year of sober living.

What We Treat: Substance Use Disorders and Mental Health

When things get out of control, it can feel like there’s nowhere to turn. The stress of living with a mental health condition can be overwhelming, especially if something traumatic has happened. You may turn to substances, just to get a break from it all. While this may feel good in the short term, these often make symptoms worse in the long term.

In addition to worsening mental health symptoms, you could develop an SUD. You get to the point where you are spending more money than you can afford, you need more and more of a substance just to get the same effect, and you spend all your time thinking about when and how you can get more of it.

A Real Recovery, we understand that these conditions, and the experiences that lead to them, are complex. In our inpatient program, we treat complex dual-diagnosis and co-occurring conditions.

What Is Dual Diagnosis?

A dual diagnosis is a specific diagnosis you will receive from a medical professional if you are living with SUD and a mental health condition at the same time. Typically, these conditions impact each other and need to be treated simultaneously.

How We Treat: Services Offered in Our Inpatient Drug Treatment Program

Inpatient treatment allows you to step away from the stress and triggers of everyday life. Whether you have been diagnosed with SUD for a long time or you’re just now considering treatment, inpatient is a good option for you.

Real Recovery is known for being the largest sober living community in Florida. We recognize how much trust our clients put in us to ensure a safe, healing environment for their recovery and we take that seriously. At our inpatient treatment center in Tampa, we offer you 24/7 structured care and personalized treatment options.

Our inpatient facilities are designed to help people who are at their lowest point with SUD and co-occurring mental health conditions find stability and move forward for long-term recovery.

We are prepared to help people just coming out of active use. We provide detoxification services referrals to ensure that you can safely get all substances out of your system. In some cases, you may also receive medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to help manage intense cravings and withdrawal side effects.

You will also participate in group and individual therapy to dive into the causes of your SUD and mental health conditions. You’ll learn to identify situations and patterns that trigger your use and develop healthy alternatives.

What Is Inpatient Treatment? Here’s What You Can Expect

Real Recovery proudly prioritizes a comprehensive inpatient program with robust services that set you up for success. These services include:

  • Group and individual therapy. Therapy techniques are tailored to your unique needs and allow you to connect with peers.
  • Medication management. Regular check-ins ensure that your medications are benefitting your recovery.
  • Psychiatric and medical evaluations. Physicians and psychiatrists will assess your physical and mental state regularly, so we can adjust your care plan and track progress during your stay.
  • Holistic approaches. We utilize art and music therapy as well as guided meditation practices, yoga, and nutritional counseling.
  • Family therapy. At Real Recovery, we understand that recovery doesn’t just affect one individual, but the whole family. That’s why we offer family counseling so everyone can better understand how to move forward as a unit.
  • Withdrawal monitoring. Our clinical staff is trained to help you safely and comfortably manage withdrawal symptoms.
  • Discharge planning. Our team will help you plan out the next steps in your recovery journey so that you know what to expect after your stay.

How Long Is Inpatient Rehab for Alcohol or Other Substance Use Disorders?

There is no right timeline for how long inpatient rehab should last. The length of your stay will depend on your needs and the rate of your progress after you arrive.

Our clinical staff will help you determine how long your stay will last. You can always add time to your stay, or reduce your stay if you’re recovering quickly.

Some clients stay at our facility for a couple of days before transitioning to our partial hospitalization program or intensive outpatient program. Other times, clients find that they need a few weeks of inpatient treatment before they are ready to return home.

What Behavioral Therapies Are Used in Inpatient Treatment?

At Real Recovery, we use evidence-based behavioral therapy techniques to get to the root of your AUD or SUD and any co-occurring mental health conditions.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. In CBT you will work with a therapist to identify unhelpful or inaccurate thoughts and how they lead to harmful behaviors. From there, you and your therapist can work together on coping strategies to change your behavior.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Similar to CBT, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is more focused on using talk therapy to manage big emotions. In DBT you and your therapist will work together to help you get in touch with your feelings and their causes. You will learn how to identify and cope with strong feelings without participating in destructive behaviors, like substance use.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EDMR) is a therapy where your therapist guides you through specific eye movements to work through trauma. This technique is designed to help you access memories and reprocess the event.

The Pros and Cons of Inpatient Treatment: Is This Right for You?

Finding the right treatment program for you is important. So, let’s review the pros and cons of inpatient treatment.

Pros

  • Fewer triggers – Here, everyone will be on the same journey with the same goal of abstaining from substance use. When you’re first starting in recovery, it can be difficult to maintain sobriety if your friends or family do not share that goal. While at our inpatient facility, you won’t be in situations that could lead to a return to use.
  • Constant medical monitoring – An inpatient treatment program gives you 24/7 access to your doctor, psychiatrist, and peer support. Especially during the early stages, when you’re experiencing withdrawals, it can be important to have access to help whenever you need it.
  • Low stress – When you’re receiving this type of treatment, there is nothing for you to focus on other than recovery. You don’t have to deal with the stressors of the outside world, manage a schedule, or figure things out on your own. Our world-class clinical staff will manage the day-to-day for you, all while keeping you informed about your care.
  • Structured environment – For many people in recovery, finding ways to fill their time can be difficult. At Real Recovery’s inpatient program, your time will be filled with treatment, education, and recreation time. This will help you stay focused on recovery while building healthy habits and developing a routine.

Cons

  • Time away from work – It is common for people to be concerned about time away from work when they are considering inpatient rehabilitation. Remember that the Family and Medical Leave Act may help you in this situation. Your employer may have specific policies in place for medical leave.
  • Time away from loved ones – It can be difficult to take time away from your friends and family for treatment, especially if they are supportive of your decision. Although they can’t be with you 24/7, your family can visit you while you’re recovering.

Does Your Insurance Cover Inpatient Rehab?

Many insurance providers will fully cover the cost of inpatient rehab. AUD and SUD are serious medical conditions that require treatment, and insurance companies understand that. If you have questions about your policy, call the number on the back of your insurance card.

We accept most insurances, including United Healthcare, BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Humana, Cigna, and Tricare. To confirm that we take your specific insurance, you can give us a call or visit our admissions page to get started today.
