I’m Looking for Sober Living

If you’re new to recovery or just completed a self-assessment test and may be wondering if you have a “problem”… first, welcome to the team, and second, you don’t have to experience all the suffering many us, our guys, have had to experience in order to wake up to the fact that you will never be able to “safely” use drugs or alcohol without serious consequences.

So… here’s the thing, if you’re anything like us (a real alcoholic or addict), you probably don’t like your current situation, shoot you may be pissed at the world and wondering why you of all people have to deal with this.

We’d bet a fancy dinner on the fact that you, the person reading this, have had some consequences related to drugs or alcohol and sure as hell have had loved ones voice their concerns about the way you act when you’re using.

Maybe you’ve been to jail, have had a DUI or three, have ruined relationships, maybe your family isn’t too happy or you’re now on absolute thin ice with them… maybe you call yourself a “functioning alcoholic” who’s managed to achieve a respectful level of success in your life but there is a common denominator — life gets fucked up when start going on a run or binge… maybe you recognize that you drink too much or you’re eating pills like mints or shooting up or whatever else it is that we do to get that euphoric high, numb yourself, or simply “survive the day.”

Maybe you’re just drinking or using substances to avoid getting sick at this point.

Whatever the reason is that you’re using, we know it’s a shitty way to live. If life was so grand and you were on a winning streak, you probably wouldn’t be on this page.

You may not like how blunt we all about it but unfortunately, we’re addicts too so being direct is the only thing that got our attention.

Who knows you’re different, the exception to what millions have experienced? We haven’t met you yet.

We’d like to though, you’re probably more like us than we are like other “normal people” who can go out to dinner, buy a $9+ glass of wine and then not even finish it. To us, that’d be like starting a line and not finishing it. Who does that? Our addicted brain tells us that would be a waste of money, right?

Here’s what we do know: if you’ve tried to stop using drugs or alcohol or have wanted to stop, only to find yourself using shortly after, you probably have a problem. And if you don’t know it already, there isn’t anything anyone else can do to keep you sober short of jails, institutions, or death unless you’re willing to fundamentally change your entire lifestyle and try something new.

As addicts and alcoholics, we’re screwed. Sorry man. But just so the person writing this doesn’t sound like a bad infomercial — there is a solution (wait there’s more).

We grab our disease of addiction and life by the horns and do something about it.

The question is — has your addiction, lifestyle, and all the consequences beat you down enough where you’re willing to change nearly everything about yourself to achieve long-term recovery?

What’s the worst that’s going to happen? You get sober, life get’s better, and next thing you know… you’re living an awesome life with friends who aren’t going to steal your wallet and help you look for it?

Doesn’t sound so bad to us but it’s your life, we all have to hit a bottom to wake up, it’s the nature of the disease of addiction.
