If You’re Considering Treatment, You’re Not Alone
Recognizing you or a loved one may struggle with alcohol or substance abuse can feel overwhelming—but recovery begins with understanding you’re not alone.

In 2023, approximately 48.5 million Americans aged 12 or older—or 17.1% of the population—had a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year. Of those, nearly 59.5% (28.9 million people) had an alcohol use disorder (AUD), and 27.2 million had a drug use disorder Health.gov+7SAMHSA+7American Addiction Centers+7SAMHSA. Alarmingly, only about 15.6% of individuals with an SUD received any form of treatment in that year SAMHSANational Association of Counties.

Alcohol is one of the most widely used substances—and it continues to be highly prevalent in U.S. adults: in 2023, 67.1% of adults (172.9 million people) reported drinking alcohol in the past year, and 23.5% (60.4 million adults) reported binge drinking at least once in the same period NIAAADrugs and Alcohol.

Why This Matters

  • AUD impacts nearly 1 in 10 adults. Most will not pursue help despite serious health risks.

  • High prevalence, low treatment rates. Only about 1 in 6 people with SUD received services in 2023 SAMHSA+5National Association of Counties+5SAMHSA+5.

  • Serious consequences. Addiction increases risk for overdose, chronic illness, impaired relationships, and mental health decline.

There Is Hope & Long-Term Sobriety at Real Recovery

sober living outcomes | RR ALUMNI 13

Many men and women enter residential treatment at Real Recovery carrying the weight of years of substance use, emotional trauma, strained relationships, and co-occurring mental health challenges. Recovery is not a quick fix, it’s a process that requires honesty, consistency, and a willingness to face addiction head-on.

While healing doesn’t happen overnight, we’ve seen time and again that lasting sobriety is possible when clients give their full effort and remain open to guidance from those who’ve successfully walked this path before.

At Real Recovery, our residential program was built by individuals in long-term recovery, people who understand what it takes to rebuild your life from the ground up. We offer a structured, alcohol- and drug-free environment where men are supported physically, mentally, and emotionally. Here, clients rediscover purpose and develop the tools they need to thrive in sobriety, one day at a time.

Battling Dismal Relapse Rates

We Help Clients Battle Dismal Relapse Rates

Relapse is a common part of the addiction recovery journey. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and other sources consistently show that 40–60% of individuals treated for substance use disorder relapse within one year—rates comparable to chronic conditions like hypertension or asthma Valley Forge Medical Center+4Arista Recovery+4Recovery Home PA+4National Institute on Drug Abuse+2AddictionHelp.com+2. For opioid use disorders, relapse rates may rise as high as 65–70% U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

A significant predictor of sustained recovery is the presence—or absence—of a stable, substance-free living environment. Returning to unsupportive or triggering settings dramatically increases the risk of relapse. By contrast, structured, drug- and alcohol-free residential settings greatly enhance long-term success.

Measuring Recovery Success Rates Across Our Sober Living Alumni

As the largest sober living program in Florida, we need to measure the success rates of graduates (alumni) to ensure we are always improving our people, processes, and program to give everyone who walks through our door the best fighting chance at long-term sobriety.

In 2018, Real Recovery launched an initiative to effectively measure the recovery rate (abstinence rate) of the men who successfully complete all three phases of our sober living program.

Of the 214 men who successfully graduated from Real Recovery in 2018, we were able to track 201 (94%) alumni’s success in recovery, that is continued abstinence from alcohol and drugs. Here’s what we found:

Numbers Don't Lie In Sobriety

0%

of alumni remained clean at least 90 days after completing the program

0%

remained abstinent at least six months after graduating Real Recovery

0%

remained sober for a year or more after completing all three phases

0%

of the alumni with one year achieved their two years sober milestone 🤯 🥳

0%

of alumni that relapsed within six months reduced or stopped attending meetings

0%

of those with a year or more sober reported they actively sponsored others in recovery

Common Factors of Alumni Celebrating One Year or More

One of the most powerful aspects of the 12-step approach and our residential treatment model is the opportunity to learn from those who’ve walked the path before you. By paying attention to the experience, strength, and hope of others, you may be able to avoid setbacks—and move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

Among the men who achieved a year or more of sobriety after completing our residential addiction treatment program, we identified several key factors that consistently supported their success. These common threads offer valuable insight for anyone preparing to complete treatment and transition into the next phase of recovery.

When you’re ready to take that next step, keep these proven principles in mind—they can make all the difference.
