How Our Program Promotes Lasting Recovery Our sober living program in Tampa Bay is designed with long-term recovery in mind. We believe that recovery is a journey that extends beyond the physical aspects of addiction. Therefore, we focus on promoting holistic healing, which includes mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Our program offers various activities and therapies, including physical fitness sessions, mindfulness training, and recreational activities to foster a balanced lifestyle. We encourage our residents to apply the skills and lessons learned during their stay into their daily lives, fostering a sustainable and fulfilling sobriety. Our Phased Approach to Sober Living Real Recovery’s sober living program is designed with a structured three-phase approach that helps residents remain accountable without unnecessary restrictions on freedom. After all, we’re not here to babysit but we know from experience that a little structure goes a long way in early recovery. Phase 1 (0 – 31 Days) The first 30-days at Real Recovery are crucial as each newcomer integrates with their community and peers. During the first month, each member is expected to: Identify their goals (recovery, personal, professional, and/or education-related) Attend five AA/NA meetings (or another approved 12-step program) Get a 12-step sponsor and begin actively working their 12-step program Find a “homegroup” – a meeting each resident enjoys and decides to attend regularly Attend weekly peer support “house meetings” facilitated by staff where everyone shares how their week went, meetings attended, any accomplishments or shortfalls, and their goals or commitments for the next week, as well as, discuss any community concerns. Abide by the 30-day curfew; 11:00 PM Sunday – Thursday, midnight on Friday and Saturday Overnight passes are not available for residents with less than 31 days It’s during the first month that the “fog” of alcohol and substance abuse begins to lift. Most residents see a general lift in mood, optimism, and begin to see the benefits of the program. Many of us in early recovery often experience “cloud nine” or what some call the “pink cloud effect” where life feels grand, a sort of ‘high on sobriety’ feeling if you will. Phase 2 (31 Days – 6 Months) Phase two begins after residents have had an opportunity to integrate themselves into the Real Recovery community. By this stage, many clients are actively participating with peers, sharing experiences, and have shown they are committed to not only their recovery but also personal and professional development. Expectations during phase two include: Attend five AA/NA meetings (or another approved 12-step program) Actively participating in their 12-step recovery program – sharing in meetings, building a support network, obtaining meeting commitments (such as making coffee, cleaning, or greeting, etc.), and attending the monthly business meeting of their homegroup Residents with 31 days or more can request up to two overnight passes per month Curfew is extended to midnight during weeknights (Sunday – Thursday), and 1:00 AM on Friday and Saturday night) During phase two is where the magic happens but it’s also the most challenging time in early recovery. By six months, most residents have completed the 8th step and have already experienced several of the “12 Step Promises.” Phase 3 (9 – 18 Months) While Real Recovery does not have set times for when a resident can or cannot move out, most clients typically stay for at least six months to upwards of 18 months. If possible, we always recommend that people stay until they have completed all 12-steps and have at least one sponsee During phase three, successful residents display the following traits: They are an active pillar within Real Recovery’s community Have a strong AA and non-AA social support network that they rely on whether they are experiencing challenges in early sobriety or when life is going well Stable employment, financial security, and self-sufficiency Have experienced a fundamental shift in their behavior, outlook, belief system, and have experienced several of the “the 12-step promises” coming true in their life Are near completing or have completed the 12-steps and actively sponsoring newcomers With hundreds of successful alumni, many of which are still sober today — experience has shown that individuals who have completed all 12-steps, developed a strong social support network, are sponsoring newcomers, and worked with Real Recovery’s staff to create a realistic exit plan before moving out typically maintain their sobriety for at least 12 months after graduating. What is Sober Living? Real Recovery’s sober living program is designed with a structured three-phase approach that helps residents remain accountable without unnecessary restrictions on freedom. After all, we’re not here to babysit but we know from experience that a little structure goes a long way in early recovery. A sober living home sometimes called a “halfway house” or “transitional living,” is a group residence or community with a structured program that helps support individuals who are in the early recovery stage of addiction with a safe alcohol-/drug-free environment. It can be extremely challenging transition right from treatment to living alone, especially if a client returns to an old area where they wer active in their addiction. The lack of a stable, alcohol and drug-free living environment can be a serious obstacle in early recovery. Destructive living environments near places, people, and things associated with previous drug or alcohol use can easily derail recovery for even the most motivated individuals in the early stages of recovery.Sober living homes act as a transitional program for people who have graduated from inpatient addiction care centers (rehabs), and especially benefit those who did not have the opportunity or could not afford an inpatient treatment program. Sober homes provide the essential structure, safety, and support by professional addiction recovery professionals to give residents the best opportunity to create the necessary strong foundation required to achieve long-term abstinence. Sober homes are different from rehab centers; rehab centers generally offer a more intensive recovery experience and give residents less freedom. Many sober living homes operate like a co-op, where a group of residents pays rent and upkeeps the home as if it were their own. People who reside in sober living facilities can usually come and go as they please as long as they follow certain rules. For example, a quality sober living home will require residents to attend a set number of relevant 12-step program meetings (typically AA or NA), abide by a curfew, maintain stable employment, volunteer or continue their education, participate in peer support group activities, and take care of daily responsibilities such as chores. These simple rules help residents learn to be responsible, help cultivate accountability, and develop the healthy everyday habits we’re familiar with to be productive members of society. The ideal sober living home will not only prohibit you from using drugs and alcohol, but also provide a sober support system for you to lean on, and encourage the skills needed for you to live a happy and healthy life. Sober Living Home vs a Half-Way House If you’re familiar with the treatment of addiction, and 12-step or other recovery programs, you’ve probably heard the terms sober living and half-way house used interchangeably. While sober homes and half-way houses are similar in several ways, they are not the same.Sober living homes and halfway houses share several common characteristics, first and foremost purpose – both sober living residences and halfway houses provide shelter and support for individuals pursuing alcohol and drug-free lifestyle. Both can also be invaluable resources for people who have recently completed residential treatment, attended an outpatient program, or left incarceration by providing several benefits, including holding residents accountable, reducing environmental and emotional relapse triggers, and helping residents establish a strong foundation, including a recovery support network, that studies have shown increase the likelihood of achieving long-term sobriety. The main difference between sober living homes and half-way house relates to quality of the accommodations, amenities, and the fact that people choose to live in a sober home, not as a condition of parole or a “nudge from the judge.” Key Differences between Sober Living Homes and Halfway Houses Key Differences between Sober Living Homes and Halfway Houses While sober living homes and halfway houses serve a common purpose, they are fundamentally different in several ways. First, halfways houses are often state-sponsored and are designed to benefit individuals who are transitioning back into society from incarceration and those who have completed a court-assigned drug and alcohol treatment program in place of serving time in county jail or prison.e rules help residents learn to be responsible, help cultivate accountability, and develop the healthy everyday habits we’re familiar with to be productive members of society. The ideal sober living home will not only prohibit you from using drugs and alcohol, but also provide a sober support system for you to lean on, and encourage the skills needed for you to live a happy and healthy life. At a sober living home, the resident is responsible for paying for their rent, food, and essential everyday items; whereas, halfway house facilities are usually funded by the US Federal Court system (DOJ) so cost is another key difference. As with most goods and services we purchase, the quality of an item is usually reflected in the cost.Due to how sober living homes and halfway houses are funded, their quality of recovery services, access to addiction professionals, amenities, and general accommodations differ greatly. Halfway houses tend to be the less expensive option because they have fewer luxury amenities like comfortable leather couches, smart TVs, high-speed internet, and modern appliance. Halway houses are more densely packed, offer less privacy, and are not managed by people in recovery. Also because many individuals at state or federally sponsored halfway houses are required to live there, not everyone is as serious about recovery or willing to actively pursue long-term sobriety which can lead to less than ideal recovery outcomes. In contrast, sober living homes are incorporated as a business or ran as a nonprofit organization, and more often managed by recovered addicts or alcoholics who have established themselves in the local recovery community.Real Recovery was founded by Patrick, an active member of AA and NA, and all of our staff members are recovering addicts or alcoholics. In short – our staff are not only Certified Recovery Support Specialists (CRRS) but have directly experienced what it means to progress through active addiction/alcoholism to achieve long-term sobriety. This has allowed us to create a realistic recovery program that resonates with our residences, one that is founded on direct experiences, and enables residents to truly connect on a deeper level across Real Recovery’s sober living program. We don’t speak from a position of authority or regurgitate clinical textbooks – we’re able to provide unfiltered, no bullshit feedback, and suggestions in recovery that have produced the results residents can see firsthand. How Much Do Sober Living Homes Cost? Just like any product or service you might pay for, the cost of sober living can vary greatly across different programs. That Malibu luxury sober living home (aka sober living resort) with daily gourmet meals, first-class amenities, and private rooms with Tempurpedic beds will undoubtedly be more expensive than your average sober living community. The cost of a sober living home is dependent on the amount of individual care offered, the level of structure, amenities available, location, length of treatment, and of course the general accommodations.
