Because of its typical white powder appearance, it is easy to mix in substances that look the same. This means that street heroin is rarely “pure”; instead, it is often mixed with other substances to enhance the effects of a euphoric high or to produce larger batches to increase profit. Substances used as cutting agents:
- Fentanyl is an extremely potent opioid whose effects have become increasingly concerning in recent years. Because fentanyl is inexpensive and easy to manufacture, it is a popular cutting agent with heroin. However, its effects and potency are still widely misunderstood, meaning that even a small amount of fentanyl in heroin can be dangerous.
- Quinine is the most common agent that is used to cut with heroin. Quinine is a medication that is typically used to treat malaria, but when used as a cutting agent, it can cause fever, chills, sores on the body, and blood in the urine.
- Over-the-counter painkillers are primarily used as a cutting agent because of their appearance. When over-the-counter painkillers are crushed up, they can hardly be distinguished from powdered heroin.
Lacing Vs. Cutting
Lacing and cutting are often used interchangeably to describe mixing substances with heroin. Both terms refer to adding other substances to enhance heroin’s euphoric effects; however, only cutting is used when referring to the practice of adding substances to artificially inflate the heroin supply. Ultimately, both terms describe the same problem: consuming something you didn’t consent to— something that can cause you harm.
Methods for Detecting Heroin Cutting Agents
It can be difficult to detect any of these cutting agents in heroin. As a rule of thumb, it is safe to assume that no heroin is 100% pure, because the manufacturing of heroin is completely unregulated. Because of the different methods of cutting and manufacturing, powdered heroin has been reported to have an average purity of 27%, meaning that it is impossible to know where your dosage will fall.
