According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 3,056 Florida residents over the age of 12 were diagnosed with substance use disorder (SUD) in 2023. At Real Recovery Solutions, we ensure that those with SUD are getting the treatment they need.

Preparing for treatment raises questions about which electronic devices are allowed during treatment. This page outlines our phone access policies, blackout periods, approved and prohibited devices, and what to expect before admission.

    Electronics Use During Treatment

At Real Recovery Solutions, each client is required to read and sign our Personal Electronic Device Privilege Rules and Regulations, which detail our policies on electronic device use within the facility.

As long as clients understand and adhere to these rules, they may use one personal device of their choice during the specified hours after treatment. If a client refuses to accept these rules, their access to personal devices will be revoked.

    Phone Access and Communication Rules

Clients may bring their cell phones into the facility; however, phone access is structured to support recovery, minimize distractions, and encourage full participation in programming.

    Residential Treatment

When clients enter residential treatment, they will participate in a 7-day phone blackout. During this period, phone use is restricted to help clients focus on stabilization, adjustment to treatment, and engagement in the recovery process. After the blackout, clients may be allowed one personal electronic device, such as a phone, tablet, or laptop. Use of this device is permitted only under a strict set of rules; violating them can result in the loss of electronic privileges.

The device must be turned in to staff and turned off during clinical hours, which are from 8:45 AM to 4:15 PM, Monday through Saturday. Residential clients also need to return their devices on Sundays from 8:45 AM to 12:15 PM.

Approved device use is permitted from 4:15 PM to 8:45 AM the following day, only in designated areas and in accordance with program rules.

    Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Clients starting our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) undergo a three-day phone blackout. After this period, they must follow the same device regulations and policies as the residential program to maintain access to their personal electronics.

The device must be handed to staff and turned off during clinical hours, which are from 8:45 AM to 4:15 PM, Monday through Saturday. As with residential treatment, approved devices are allowed from 4:15 PM to 8:45 AM the following day, provided they are used in approved areas and in accordance with program guidelines.

    What We Offer You

What Our Residents Have to Say

    Electronics Policy

    Why Electronics May Be Limited

    • In the early stages of recovery, limiting access to electronic devices allows clients to engage in treatment, avoid distractions, and focus on developing healthy coping skills.
    • Early recovery involves stabilization, self-reflection, and the development of new habits, all of which can be hindered when clients remain connected to external distractions.
    • Because personal devices can affect treatment, the recovery environment, and other clients’ privacy, their use is governed by clear program rules.
    • Through our electronics policy, we provide clients with the best opportunity to build a foundation for lasting recovery.

Staying Connected With Family and Loved Ones

Maintaining healthy connections with loved ones can be an important part of the recovery process, which is why communication during treatment is structured to support treatment goals while allowing clients to stay connected.

After these blackout periods, family involvement is encouraged through our weekly virtual family support group. This program provides family members and loved ones with education, support, and opportunities to understand the recovery process better while strengthening healthy communication and relationships.

Through our programs, we ensure that clients maintain meaningful connections with their support network while prioritizing healing, treatment, and sustainable recovery.

    Laptops, Work, and School Responsibilities

Laptop use is permitted at Real Recovery Solutions; however, the use of a laptop must follow program guidelines and align with each client’s treatment schedule and recovery goals.

Clients may use their approved device to:

    • Stay connected with approved family members and other positive recovery supports.
    • Communicate with their sponsor, employer, attorney, or approved childcare contacts.
    • Manage important treatment, legal, financial, work, school, or family responsibilities.
    • Access approved recovery, wellness, scheduling, and productivity tools that support long-term success.

At Real Recovery Solutions, treatment is about preparing clients for life beyond our facilities. Learning to balance recovery with work, school, and personal responsibilities is part of building the skills needed for lasting ongoing recovery.

Tablets, Kindles, Gaming Systems, and Other Devices

Use discretion when bringing electronic devices to treatment. Many electronic devices can be distracting during the recovery process and will be held by staff during treatment.

The following items are not permitted at Real Recovery Solutions:

    • E-readers
    • Gaming devices
    • Radios
    • Smart watches
    • Headphones
    • Any other electronic device that could interfere with patient treatment, participation, privacy, or safety

What Electronics to Bring and What to Leave at Home

Clients are responsible for their own devices during treatment and for sticking to the rules set to keep them.

The following guide can help you determine the electronics that you are welcome to bring to our facilities.

Choice of oneCan bringLeave at home
    • Cell Phone
    • Tablets
    • Laptops
    • Vapes and e-cigarettes
    • E-readers
    • Game systems
    • MP3
    • Radios
    • Large electronics
    • Smart watches

Using a personal device is a privilege that goes hand in hand with your commitment to recovery. The expectation is simple: stay engaged, take ownership of your treatment, and follow program guidelines.

To maintain device privileges, clients are expected to:

    • Follow all program rules and staff directions.
    • Attend and actively participate in group therapy, individual sessions, and assigned activities.
    • Arrive on time and remain engaged throughout the treatment day. Electronic devices should never interfere with treatment or be used to avoid program responsibilities.
    • Treat staff and fellow clients with respect and contribute to a positive recovery environment.

Recovery requires commitment, consistency, and accountability. Clients who do not participate in treatment or who do not follow program expectations may have their electronic device privileges reduced, temporarily suspended, or revoked.

    Questions About the Electronics Policy
